FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is the facility that allows sending or retrieving files to and from a remote machine.

Before using FTP, departmental MSc students should login on their own i: drive so that files can be retrieved into their personal disk space on the network rather than onto the PC's hard disk. You do this by typing login username (using your personal username) at the DOS prompt then pressing ENTER, after which you will be asked for your password. To get to the DOS prompt from the Windows environment you double-click on the MS-DOS icon in the Windows group labelled Main.

Invoking FTP

FTP is traditionally invoked from a linemode environment such as the DOS prompt. You can invoke FTP from here by typing ftp then pressing enter. This will give you an ftp> prompt. However, working with DOS is not as flexible for the user as working with Windows.

It is possible to work with FTP using the Windows interface. Dept Users should double-click on the FTP icon in the Windows group labelled eXceed/W. This should produce an FTP window inside which there is an ftp> prompt. After this, readjust the sizes of your windows to see the Mosaic and FTP applications simultaneously. It may also help to minimize your Windows Program Manager window for easier viewing. Then go through procedures with the help of this tutorial.
