Hello all.

In regards to the recent question about saving the images
associated with HTML pages found on the net, I thought I'd share
something I noticed recently. First of all, this hint is
primarily for WINDOWS users, or those on DOS systems. To
everybody else, sorry. Well, here goes.....

First of all, I use Netscape 1.0 as my WWW browser. You're
probably aware that this program cache's downloaded files to
speed up operations (usually in c:\netscape\cache directory). I also use
a program called Qpeg to view GIF/JPG images. Qpeg is a very
fast DOS application for viewing images. It makes a list of the
directory you're in and shows you which files are "viewable." I happened
to be browsing through my hard drive the other day and noticed
that Qpeg was able to view the image files stored in the
Netscape cache directory. Once you know which files are the
pictures, it's a simple matter to save them with another name.
I don't see why any other graphic viewer wouldn't work as well
as Qpeg for his sort of stuff. I just use Qpeg because it's so fast.

So, for the course member who wanted to save web pages/pictures
to disk, all they need to do is save the file, get the pictures
from the cache, and convert the remote links in the file to
local links.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth of input and hints. I'm sorry
if this is just telling you all something you already figured
out, but I thought it was pretty neat. It might not be the most
efficient way to get the job done, but it'll work. I hope this
helps.

Thanks,

Steve
