The Amino Acids
These diagrams of the 20 amino acids which occur naturally in proteins have been produced by previous PPS student Jens J Loesel.
They illustrate the chirality of the amino acids: bonds marked indicate respectively bonds "going into the screen", (dashed lines) and bonds "coming out of the screen" (solid lines). The narrow end of these bonds is in the plane of the screen and represents the chiral centre.
Glycine | Alanine | Valine |
Leucine | Isoleucine | Serine |
Threonine | Aspartic Acid | Glutamic Acid |
Asparagine | Glutamine | Lysine |
Arginine | Cysteine | Methionine |
Histidine | Proline | Phenylalanine |
