Adhesion
There a four major families of membrane-associated cell adhesion
proteins. Some of these are involved in maintaining the stability of
multicellular tissues, some are of prime importance in tissue
organisation during development, and yet others are involved in
recruitment to sites of inflammation, or other activities in the immune
system. Within this last category are found the evolutionary
precursors of the immune system in lower animals.
