We have a Ph.D. studentship available to study the use of emerging object-oriented software technologies in bioinformatics and molecular modelling. The successful candidate will look at new ways to efficient store, retrieve and manipulate biological data. They will experiment with the use of object-oriented databases to store molecular sequence and structure objects. In addition, the student will also investigate the use of CORBA to distribute these objects across local networks and across the Internet. The student will join our BBSRC funded Software Engineering Group which is building a C++ class library for the construction of object-oriented bioinformatics software. Ideally, applicants should have at least six months experience in developing object-oriented software. However, we will consider candidates trained in computer science and who have an interest developing biological applications or candidates trained in a biological science who have a strong interest in the use of computer technology in biological research. If you would like to be considered for this studentship, please contact Jody McGill for an application form and further details by the end of June, 1997.
