The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) publishes
recommendations for the nomenclature of chemical compounds that form
the international standard for terminology in Chemistry and related sciences.
IUPAC names for compounds are unique (so they can be used to identify a
chemical compound) but often too long and complex to serve as useful
compound identifiers in databases.
