Cocaine is derived from the coca plant, native to the mountain ranges
of South America. Chewing leaves of the plant (primarily to gain energy
and fight altitude sickness) goes back a few thousand
years, but when brought to the western world, cocaine found a number of
different uses: as an additive to wine and Coca Cola, as a local anaesthetic,
and of course as a recreational drug for its effects on the central
nervous system.
