Telnetw

A graphical form of Telnet also exists, called TelnetW (Windowed Telnet) and is found on Windows systems and Mac systems (although Mac Telnet may be called differently). To start the program, double click on the Telnet icon. There are a multitude of menu options but we will only look at the most important ones.

Connecting Windows Users

You can connect to a remote machine by clicking the Connect menu, then choosing the Conn/Disc menu option. This will present you with another choice of options. Specify NETWORK for the Port Name, then specify the name of the machine in the Node Name box (for example, mv3b). After that, clicking on the Connect button will connect you to the appropriate machine. You will be prompted for your username and password as usual.

Mac Users

Click on the connect button of the Telnet application. You should get a choice of options and a list of machines you can connect to. There will also be a box into which you can type the machine address. Type the address into that box and press OK which will connect you to the appropriate machine. You will be prompted for your username and password as usual.

Exiting

After logging out from the remote machine, Windows users should click on the File menu using the mouse and then the on Exit option. Mac users may be exited automatically ; if not you should click on the button labelled exit or quit.
