shield BIRKBECK'S PROTEIN DATA BANK MIRROR

This is the public entry point into the mirrored copy of the Protein Data Bank, archived at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States.

Before you continue . . .

If you wish to examine or download structure files from this PDB-affiliated site you must first accept the terms and conditions set out in the Advisory Document. This site is intended for UK sites only. Please find a mirror site closer to home if at all possible.

At Birkbeck

The formats that we have available here correspond to :
- a single directory of uncompressed protein structure files (data/ - huge!), and
- a set of directories named for the middle two characters of the 4-letter code (current/)
that may be browsed using a web browser such as Netscape or Mosaic.

Our site is updated from Brookhaven at regular intervals but doesn't include any reflection files, nor the ancillary documents and programs that are available at Brookhaven.

We hope soon to provide forms-based search facilities, as well as supporting Brookhaven's own PDB-Browser. Other suggestions for what you would like to see at this site are welcomed, and may be sent to www@mail.cryst.bbk.ac.uk

If you already know the four-character code of the structure you are seeking, then you may enter it directly in your browser's Open URL feature as:-

http://www.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/PDB/pdbcode.pdb

where you should replace code with the four-character code in lower-case.

Chemical MIME

Our web server transmits .pdb protein structure files using chemical MIME (Multimedia Internet Mail Enclosures) so that you may arrange for the molecular viewer RasMol to fire up automagically when you click on a .pdb file from your browser. Learn how to configure your browser. To test your configuration, try this pdb file for RasMol. There's also a discussion list on it.

Crystallography & Protein Structure

are among the main interests of the Crystallography Department here at Birkbeck. We have developed an Internet-based Course on The Principles of Protein Structure, as well as running a number of other courses. If you wish to study here, please ask us for a prospectus.
