Subject: New PDB Format Description

The PDB is making available a revised format description, entitled
Protein Data Bank Atomic Coordinate Entry Format Description: An Annotated
Reference Manual. The purpose of this revised Format Description is to give a
complete description of the contents of PDB coordinateentry files. Several
changes are being introduced to PDB files to make them easier to read for both
the human reader and computer parser. This document is still undergoing changes
and is being released at this time to solicit comments and suggestions.

This document is available in several formats (HTML, plain text, and
PostScript) from FTP, Gopher, and WWW in the /pub directory. The files
are called format.desc.ps and format.desc.txt for the postscript and plain
text versions of the document. A more advanced HyperText version is being
designed for later release.

A convenient way to peruse the Format Description is to use Mosaic or
another WWW interface. Access the PDB home page by opening the URL
http://www.pdb.bnl.gov/. Move to "PDB New Format Description".

Please directs comments and suggestions to Enrique E. Abola (abola1@bnl.gov)
or to Nancy Oeder-Manning (oeder@bnl.gov).
