I've mentioned this before, but I'm going to start a new thread. I found
(by accident, as it happens) that Netscape 1.0N on the SGI can cope with
uncompressing .Z files and passing them via the normal mime mapping. In
other words, you can choose a `.pdb.Z' link in your browser and get the
same effect as if you had chosen a `.pdb' link. In my case, this sparks up
RasMol. Here are a couple of links to a tiny (4 atom) file in both `.pdb'
and `.pdb.Z' forms for you to try. PLEASE TRY THEM. Post to this thread
and let us know what happens.
Although I doubt we'll be providing ONLY compressed files, it might be
worth our while providing .Z versions in addition; they only take
(roughly) 1/4 of the transmission time, and will reduce net/server load.
