This mail is not meant unkindly, but to remove the possibility of some
friction.

There is a strong etiquette for good mail discipline which I have
already mentioned. However, for people who are new, it takes time to
realise that this exists and how strongly some people feel about it. It
is very easy to get into 'flamewars' unnecessarily.

To avoid flamewars (i.e. when two or more people criticise each
other in public), please exercise patience. Alan and I are reading these
mail lists very frequently and we shall exercise moderation when necessary.
Therefore (a) PLEASE TRY TO KEEP TO THE GUIDELINES I HVAE MENTIONED (b)
DO NOT TRY TO ACT AS MODERATOR. (If you speak too strongly, you can
cause considerable hurt to someone who was finding it takes a
psychological effort to make their first posting.) It will work out well
in the end.
