A new High Performance Computing facility for the School of Crystallography at Birkbeck was opened by Professor Julia Goodfellow, former Head of School and now Chief Executive of the BBSRC.

The new Institute of Structural Molecular Biology, formed between Birkbeck's School of Crystallography and the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Chemistry at UCL, announces an international Launch Symposium on June 3 & 4, 2004.

The 2003 Winter Meeting meeting of the British Crystallographic Association Biological Structures Group was held at Birkbeck College. The theme was "Protein Complexes".

The 2003 Bernal Lecture was given at 17:00 on Tuesday 18 November 2003, by Professor Sir Tom Blundell, former Head of the School of Crystallography and now holder of the Sir William Dunn Chair of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. His title was "Post-genomic science, structural biology and drug discovery: opportunities and challenges."

From the start of the Autumn term 2003, the new system of room numbering is being used throughout the School (and the rest of the Main Building). Maps and charts showing old and new room numbers are available here.

Alan Mills, one of the pioneers of online teaching at the School of Crystallography, has died from cancer. Alan was a postdoc in Tom Blundell's group in the 1990s. He then worked with Peter Murray-Rust to set up the Principles of Protein Structure course, before leaving Birkbeck to found his company, Venus Internet.

24.04.2003:
The 50th anniversary of the publication of two critical Nature papers on DNA structure: one co-authored by Birkbeck's Rosalind Franklin.

02.03.2003:
Claire Naylor, a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow at this department, held the 5th annual Dorothy Hodgkin Memorial Lecture at the Oxford University Museum for Natural History. Her topic was: "Pathogenic proteins: How bacterial agents cause disease."

28.01.2003:
As the 50th anniversary of the publication of the double helix model approaches (25.4.1953), there is also renewed interest in the story of Birkbeck crystallographer Rosalind Franklin (e.g. Nature 421, p.407). Clare Sansom wrote a profile for BBK magazine [PDF].

01.12.2002:
Dr Clare Sansom is now working as a Business Fellow with the London Technology Network. In this part-time position, she aims to optimise the department's links and collaborations with industry.

The department welcomes several new staff members for the new academic year:
Professor Gabriel Waksman joins us with his postdoctoral fellows Dr Hye Jeong Yeo and Dr Laurent Terradot; Dr Tracey Barrett and Dr Adrian Shepherd take up lectureships; and Dr Nora de Leeuw joins Paul Barnes' group as an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow.
