(Logo) MOOs and MUDs, especially BioMOO

IndexTechnology Index

A MUD (multi-user dungeon) is a virtual meeting place which contains objects and people which behave (in principle!) in a similar way to real-life equivalents. The system is based on rooms which can conatin objects and where people can meet; in general peoples' activity is restricted to the current room. A MOO is a MUD built on Object-Oriented principles.

MOOs have great potential for educational purposes and professional communication and one has been specifically created by Gustavo for biologists. It's about a year old and is regularly used for biologists to meet and hold events, such as seminars and journal clubs. Gustavo Glusman (who is a director of VSNS) Eric Mercer and others have developed a graphical interface to BioMOO and are making rooms available for this course.

The question is what version of WWW browser client you're using.
Old versions of Netscape and Mosaic just don't follow protocol when sending
POST (form) requests, and the MOO just waits to get the info, and times
out.
The solution is just - get the newest client.
(If you're using Macs, the best IMO is Netscape 0.96, not Netscape 1.0N)
Good luck!
To the VSNS-PPS admin group - maybe this point should be stressed to the students. Unfortunately, there is no way (technically) for the MOO to support the wrong protocol that old clients use. ------------------------------------------------------------- Gustavo Glusman Founder/administrator of BioMOO -- Gustavo@bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il --http://bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il:70/0h/Gustavo/Glusman -- BioMOO: telnet bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il 8888 WWW: http://bioinfo.weizmann.ac.il:8888

Subject: adding web stuff toBioMOO objects
For those using the World Wide Web to explore BioMOO, I have written a document describing how to add images or other multimedia data to your objects. It also describes how to add icons, HTML documents, or links to web pages outside BioMOO. It can be found at:
http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~mercer/htmls/AddingObjectImages.html

If you are aware of the Web and have a graphical web browser, but didn't realize BioMOO has multimedia potential, check out:
