This is a very nice discussion - I don't know the answer to Tom's point
because I suspect it depends on differences in dielectric. (To a first
approximation the dipole can be calculated from point charges, moderated
by the dielectric. The next effect is polarisation.)

I've suddenly realised that the question was ambiguous! When it talked
about 'the same length' I automatically assumed it meant geometrical
length. But it could also be read to mean 'number of residues'. What
difference would this have? :-)
