Dear PPS96 Participants,

We have now got in all the forms that we expect for Assessed Assignment 1 and
below there is a list of the correct answers and a list of the marks coded
by student PDB code. (Please note that several people have code 4ins and in
these cases we have also put in the country code from your email address to
enable you to identify yourselves!). We are very pleased indeed that a good
number of people got all the correct answers and no-one got less than
half the correct answers.

Notes.
-----
1. The results of Assignment 1 will be taken into consideration in the final
assessment of the PPS96 course at the Examiners' Meeting at the end of the
course. Other work taken into account for assessment will be Assignment 2,
the Project/Dissertation and the final written examination, as applicable.
Therefore the marks given below should be considered 'raw data' at this
stage and may be subject to further data analysis and renormalisation by
the Examiners' Meeting in consultation with the External Examiner.

2. Several of you mailed the lists or included in your answers some queries
about what looked to you like ambiguities in the questions. We have looked
at these carefully and concluded the following:

(i) Question 14 contained an error (a negative was omitted, making nonsense of
the question) and this question has been withdrawn from the assessment. It
was not possible to obtain a 'correct answer' to this question as written.
Many apologies to those of you who spent time on this question.

(ii) Question 15 was also the subject of some queries because the first 3
possibilities seemed unclear. However, our view is that
statement (d) was so obviously wrong that this question should stand -
also, most of you got the correct answer for this one.

(iii) In Question 5 (a) some of you objected to the fact that the phi-angle is
not defined for A1. We agree that this answer was a bit of a trick and maybe
could have been worded better, but again most people got this one OK.

3) A few people marked two answers for a couple of questions. If one of these
was correct, we gave 1/2 mark for it.

Best wishes and thanks for your excellent efforts on this assignment! Let
me, your tutor or the lists know any further queries about it.

Jacky
