Dear PPS96 Member

First, I would like to welcome you to the PPS96 course on behalf
of the Department of Crystallography and Birkbeck College. We thank you
for the confidence that you show in us by registering for the course
or by offering your services as a consultant.

This is the first time that the Department of Crystallography has run
an accredited distance learning course although our Organisational
Psychology Department has run distance learning courses using computer
conferencing for a number of years. Our PPS96 course builds on pioneering
work by Alan Mills and Peter Murray-Rust who ran a pilot course using WWW
last year.

Many people are involved in the running of this course. We have put
up their names, responsibilities and email addresses on a Web page
so that you can contact the relevant person if you have a problem.
Please excuse us if there is any confusion at the start as there is
a lot for us to learn as well!

I would especially like to thank our Co-ordinating Tutors, Jacky Turner
and John Walshaw whose dedication over the past four months has made
this course possible and Peter Murray-Rust whose continuing technical advice
is so valuable.

I hope that we will all find this course to be fun as well as an
education. In addition to learning about protein structure, there will
be the exploration of the technology behind the course. Internet
developments are happening rapidly and we aim to employ the best new
technologies in our teaching.

Here's to your success!
