Check Your Email - Use it or Lose it

An Email address (e.g. something@mail.cryst.bbk.ac.uk) is included with all computer accounts on the School’s computer. This email address will be for general and course specific announcements and all users should check their email frequently, ideally at least once a week.

It is possible to arrange email forwarding for those people who would rather receive their email on a different system. When forwarding is used it is the account owners responsibility to ensure that the forwarding records are correct.

A computer account may be considered abandoned and consequently disabled for the following reasons:
  • Email has been unread for several weeks and forwarding is not in use.
  • Forwarding is in use but the forwarded to address is no longer valid.
To avoid missing important announcements or risk having their account disabled users are recommended to check their email frequently or set and keep current forwarding.

Recently the College has started issuing all students with an account and email address (e.g. username@students.bbk.ac.uk) on the Central Computer Service (CCS) systems. The College has also started to use this CCS email address to contact students. To avoid missing important announcements students should either frequently check for email on their CCS account or set forwarding.  Your CCS email account can be accessed remotely via a web browser

The College is also using email to communicate with staff and circulate general or specific announcements. Email for Crystallography staff accounts is automatically forwarded from the CCS servers to the Crystallography servers

In addition to email the CCS account also provides access to other services including:

  •  The College wireless Network
  •  Electronic access to the Library
The CCS account is automatically deleted after a student is recorded as no longer registered for a course. For most students accounts this usually on or after 1 November in the new academic year
